Initiatives

The timing of our programs depends upon the level of funding we are able to attract.

Teaching Citizenship In Elementary School Program

Goal - To develop teaching materials and resources to support the teaching of citizenship in the elementary grades and which can be easily integrated in K - 5 Social Studies curricula.

Status - We have developed crossword puzzles and word searches (interactive and in print form) for school-aged children. We also developed a list of citizen actions by grade-level.

In 2012 - We are in the midst of drafting a "teaching citizenship" unit for teachers and parents to use to teach students:

  • the importance of being actively involved in our democracy, and
  • how to be effective citizens.

This "teaching citizenship" education unit contains lesson plans and related materials. It can be used as part of the Social Studies curriculum or to supplement a character education program like Character Counts.

Currently, this "teaching citizenship" education unit is generic and not grade-specific. So for a while, teachers and parents will have to use the "unit" as a starter kit and adapt it to their class and situation. Over time, we will develop "teaching citizenship" units for groups of grade levels such as K-1, grades 2-3, grades 4-5, middle school and high school.

Public Awareness Program

Goal - To gain broad, national exposure to Good Citizen's message and the citizen actions.

Status - The Good Citizen website is currently the #1 result returned by all the major search engines - including: Google, Bing, Dogpile, Ask.com, AltaVista, and Yahoo - when searching for both "good citizen" and "effective citizen."

In 2012 - We intend to increase our exposure on the major search engines with a few more search words such as "involved citizen" and "responsible citizen."

We will continue to take advantage of other sites willing to link to Good Citizen - links to a site help increase its search result position.

We are pursuing three other methods of increasing Good Citizen's message as time permits.

  1. Continue to give Good Citizen's multimedia presentation to service organizations & clubs.
  2. Arrange to be interviewed on radio talk shows.
  3. Investigate radio Public Service Announcement opportunities.

Citizenship Portal Program

Goal - To make the www.goodcitizen.org website the primary source of information, links and resources about citizenship (not becoming one but being one) on the Internet.

Status - We have added a section to the website called Resources - it contains books, articles, speeches, organizations and materials related to being an effective citizen.

In 2012, we anticipate making the following enhancements to the Good Citizen website.

  1. Refining and adding citizen actions.
  2. Improving the Print Book capability to allow a user to select specific citizen actions for printing.
  3. Adding reader submitted stories.
  4. Keeping the "Overwhelming Issues" chapter current.
  5. Include links to other sites with useful and related information about aspects of citizenship.
  6. Make GC's multi-media presentation available at no cost via the web site.

Integrating How To Be An Effective Citizen Into the Naturalization Process Program

Goal - To build into the Naturalization process information about how to be an effective citizen.

Status - None to date.

In 2012, our goal is to understand the Naturalization Process and determine how information on how to be an effective citizen might be integrated into the Process.

Fund Raising Program

Goal - To obtain the grant funding and public contributions needed to carry out Good Citizen's Programs.

Status - We have added a Donate function to the site. Individuals can donate using a credit card via PayPal or a check. We can also handle anonymous donations.

In 2012 - we will raise funds in three ways:

  1. writing grant proposals to organizations that support citizenship and civic education;
  2. facilitating the ability to make financial contributions via the web site; and
  3. participating in corporate matching funds programs.

No donated funds will be used for fund raising purposes unless specifically earmarked for such purposes.

Programs - Beyond 2012

We intend to design and sell via the web site, high quality citizen action t-shirts.

Our focus will be on increasing public awareness and on educational strategies and resources for teaching young Americans about the importance of being involved citizens and how to be effective citizens.

We intend to write a children's book about The Impact of a Single Act.
