Public Awareness Program

The purpose of the program is to gain broad national exposure to Good Citizen's message and the citizen actions. This will be an on-going Program.  In 2009, we intend to create awareness in five ways.

1.     Improve the visibility of www.goodcitizen.org on major Internet search engines.
There are close to 400 million people online throughout the world. Internet studies show that over 85% use search engines on a daily basis. In 2005, we will make changes to the www.goodcitizen.org pages that will maximize its visibility on the Google and Yahoo search engines when individuals search for information related to citizenship.  The types of changes will include:

    a.  Ensuring that the keywords, site description and content on each page are “spider friendly” as this is the information that search engine “spiders” look at when they “crawl” a site to index it.

    b.  Getting other sites to link to www.goodcitizen.org.  The number of links from web sites to www.goodcitizen.org is a factor search engines use to rank the various sites found from a particular search.

We already have a citizen action called Place a link to www.goodcitizen.org on your personal website.  This citizen action contains instructions for placing the Good Citizen logo on a site and linking to the Good Citizen website.

Many search engines charge  a fee to index a web site and additional fees for preferential placement of the site in the results of a search.   We do not intend to pursue these search engines.

www.goodcitizen.org is hosted by Godaddy.  We currently monitor traffic to our site using tools provided by them.  These tools provide statistics on things like the number of visitors, the number of pages viewed per visitor etc.   These tools will enable us to monitor the effectiveness of this Program.

2.Give presentations and make the presentation available, to organizations
We will improve our existing PowerPoint presentation and continue to make presentations to a variety of service organizations, associations and clubs.

In the past we have made the PowerPoint slides available to interested individuals.  We will make this option available on the web-site and formalize the presentation script so that it can be included with the slides.

3.Interviews with Radio Talk Show Hosts
Our intent is be interviewed on local and national talk radio shows.  We will make contact via email and by calling-in to the radio talk shows.

We recently were asked by WBET in Charlotte, NC to talk with morning talk show host Gary Anderson.  This interview was postphoned  because of election-related news.

4. Letters to the Editor
We will write at least one letter to the editor and send it to an assortment of publications.  We will use this as a pilot as it's not clear that the benefit outweighs the effort and cost.

5. Public Service Announcements
In Los Angeles and other markets, Michael Josephson of Character Counts, gives one minute commentaries on character-related issues and stories.  We intend to investigate the feasibility of creating similar commentaries with a focus on citizen actions.
